Self-confidence, in simple terms, is the acceptance of abilities, where abilities can be for anything.

It is about how much you accept your ability to learn, think, judge, understand, make decisions, arrive at conclusions, etc.

Let me give you an example to illustrate the point.

Many skills are required to drive a motorbike, such as the ability to take turns, maintain balance, stop, maintain distance, etc.

But to have an ability and to accept it are two different subjects. You may have all the abilities required to drive a motorbike but still not accept that you possess them.

You only feel confident in driving a motorbike when you accept that you have the ability to drive it.

So, that's why self-confidence is the acceptance of abilities, where abilities can be for anything. Let's now talk about self-respect.

Self-respect is about valuing yourself, which means valuing your thoughts, words, wants, needs and everything associated with you.

There are different ways to value yourself, such as:

  • Stand up for yourself when others disrespect you.

  • Express your thoughts, needs, and wants without worrying about other's judgement or rejection.

  • Have values and do your best to live by those values.

  • Consider yourself worthy of love, happiness and success.

  • Respect your time, and do not allow others to waste it.

  • Accept your unchangeable flaws like short height, weak voice, hair type, etc.

  • Disagree and say no when you want to instead of pleasing people.

There are more ways to respect yourself, and we can dive into each. But this must have given you a fair idea of what self-respect is. Now, let me emphasize the importance of self-confidence and self-respect.

Self-confidence determines how much you accept your abilities. And you can only use your abilities to your full potential if you accept them entirely.

Living with low self-confidence is like knowing how to ride a motorbike but not riding it because you can't accept your abilities. You miss all the fun that comes with riding a motorbike.

When you live with high self-confidence, you set ambitious goals, persist in the face of difficulties, step out of your comfort zone, feel less shy, correct and learn from mistakes, pick yourself up from setbacks, etc.

On the other hand, when you have high self-respect, you command more respect from others, express yourself authentically, overcome your insecurities, live with integrity, live on your principles, feel deserving of love and happiness, etc.

Self-confidence and self-respect help you achieve your goals, improve your social life, and feel more fulfilled, leading to a better life. Let's now discuss how to develop self-confidence and self-respect.

Self-confidence and self-respect follow an interesting principle. When you live a lifestyle that requires self-confidence and self-respect, your self-confidence and self-respect improve.

So, you need to know and follow the lifestyle of people with high self-confidence and self-respect to improve your self-confidence and self-respect.

For example, highly respected people honour their thoughts, needs and wants and express them appropriately. Let's say you include this in your lifestyle.

You will then express your opinion and not live to please others. You stand by your views and do not change opinions to avoid judgment and rejection from others.

People value authenticity and unfiltered opinions more than fake ones so they will value your opinion more. You will respect your views even more when you see the respect others give you.

Similarly, people with honour do not tolerate disrespect. They communicate that they don't appreciate disrespectful behaviour. They cut off the relationship if the people involved do not change their behaviour.

When you include this in your lifestyle, more people will listen to you, treat you well and respect you. You will then value yourself even more when you see others valuing you.

Similarly, people with high self-confidence think for themselves because they accept their thinking ability. Following this lifestyle will mean you think for yourself instead of relying on others to think for you.

When you think for yourself, you will not rely entirely on others to decide. You can take their advice, but you also think about the decision critically.

Let's say your decision becomes a success. As you were involved in actively making a decision, you will take credit for it naturally. You will realize that your thinking ability helped you succeed, and you will trust it more. You will become more self-confident than before.

You can observe this for all aspects of the lifestyle of people with high self-confidence and self-respect. But can you use this principle to develop your self-confidence and self-respect?

Is it possible for a person with low self-confidence and self-respect to live a lifestyle that requires high self-confidence and self-respect?

It is. But it is certainly not a cakewalk. You can think of self-confidence and self-respect as muscles.

Just like you lift weights using your muscles to grow them, you follow the lifestyle of people with high self-confidence and self-respect.

You cannot initially put excessive overload on your muscles because they are weak. So, you increase the load progressively and grow your muscles gradually.

In the same way, you don't need to follow the activities perfectly. You need to be willing to do as much as you can so that you gradually develop high self-confidence and self-respect.

I have already told you some aspects of the lifestyle of people with high self-confidence and self-respect.

However, there are many more aspects to it that I have covered in my program, 'Self-esteem PIll.' It contains 30 days of exercise to help you track your progress with each aspect you learn in the book.
