Let me tell you a simple way to improve your social skills. I followed it when I started working on my social skills. It benefited me in various ways after I followed it for some weeks. I will first tell you about what the activity is and then tell you how and what it can help you improve.
You must assume you are a creator and want to make a video for your public account. Remember that your video will be visible to your friends, family, co-workers, etc.
Sit before the camera of your laptop or mobile phone and shoot a video. You have to speak before the camera for 5-10 minutes about any topic you like. You can talk about a mix of topics, too, if you wish.
You can speak about trip experiences, life goals, typical daily life, opinions on controversial topics, movies, hobbies, etc.
Remember, as you are shooting a video for your YouTube account, try to speak articulately. That is, speak without pauses or filler words like "uh", "ah", "uhm", "and", etc. Try to make the video enjoyable so that people listen to it to the end. You can do it by telling stories that keep people hooked till the end and make them feel emotions.
It is okay if you cannot speak fluently during your first trial. Avoid reshooting the videos even when they are not so good. You should give your best but not aim for perfection.
When you finish the video, watch it, analyse your mistakes and try to fix them in future videos. Try to shoot as many videos as you can. The more you practice, the better your skills will be.
Now that you have understood the assignment, let me tell you why it works and what it can do for you.
You will learn to navigate your thoughts and speak articulately when you talk about a specific topic for about 5-10 minutes.
You learn to remember experiences, stories, and events related to the current discussion topic. You can use this skill to avoid awkward pauses and have an excellent conversation.
The first video you shoot will be full of pauses and filler words like 'ah', 'so', 'uh', etc. You will catch them when you watch your video yourself. Over time, you will learn to avoid these filler words and speak fluently.
When you speak fluently, you can easily understand, connect and trust. It instantly improves the quality of your public speeches and presentations.
When you try to make the video enjoyable by telling stories, you become a better storyteller. You learn to tell stories, keep people hooked and make them feel emotions. As you shoot more and more videos, you will collect many stories you can refer to whenever you want to tell a story at a date, friend gathering, social event, etc.
Remember to watch videos and analyse and improve mistakes in the following videos. Keep repeating it until you notice the benefits in yourself. I have tried this, and it has helped me improve my social skills. So why don't you give it a try?
